Art and Mental Health
Bangor University's Wellbeing Services has developed a package of art activities to support well-being, which has been led by Gwawr Roberts. Some students may find it difficult to express their feelings verbally, and art can help them communicate difficult experiences. As part of her role as a Counsellor and Art Psychotherapist, Gwawr holds a number of bilingual one-to-one and group sessions at the university.
Why are art activities beneficial for mental health?
Engaging in creative activities, such as art, music or visiting a gallery can bring about a sense of satisfaction and trigger the release of dopamine in the brain. This important chemical can promote pleasure and help with focus and planning. You don't have to be a skilled artist to enjoy the benefits of art. Trying something new can be a great way to tap into your creativity. More information on the benefits of art can be found on the Mind website.
